Overpayments & funding restrictions

2021-22 OSAP Application for Full-time Students

If you received more money than you’re currently eligible for, you may have an overpayment which can impact your eligibility for future OSAP funding.

A funding overpayment occurs when your application is re-assessed and it has been determined that you received more loan and/or grant funding than you’re entitled to receive.

Some examples of why an OSAP application is reassessed are:

  • You and/or your family (if applicable) reported income to OSAP that was less than the actual income reported to Canada Revenue Agency.
  • You reported additional income after you submitted your OSAP application.
  • You reduced your course load and/or you withdrew from full-time studies before the end of your study period.
  • Information on your application changed as a result of a review by the OSAP Inspection and Compliance Unit.

An overpayment exists when you have been issued grant and/or loan in excess of your current OSAP entitlement after all funding has been disbursed to you. It’s important to be aware that you may be at risk of future restrictions if you incur overpayments. You could be restricted from getting OSAP if:

  • you have an overpayment exceeding $2,000 per year in 3 or more academic years, and/or,
  • the total amount of your overpayments is greater than $10,000.

If you are restricted as a result of an overpayment, you will be required to pay back part of the overpayment in order to regain eligibility for future OSAP funding.

If you are restricted from future OSAP funding as a result of an overpayment, you will be notified and informed of your repayment obligations at that time.
