How and when you’ll get your money

2019-20 OSAP Application for Full-time Students

You’ll receive your OSAP funding in payments. As a general rule, a student starting school in September for a 2 term program can expect to receive 2 payments: the 1st in September and the 2nd in January. If your application is reassessed and more money available, you may receive an additional payment that is paid out at another point during your study period.

Before a payment can be released, your application must be complete. This means that all conditions have been met (e.g. required documents have been reviewed and approved). To find out if your money can be released or if there are any outstanding items preventing the release of your funding, review the information under “Status”.

Here is a list of the different reasons that you’ll find under the “Status” section of each payment:

  • Released: money has been sent to your bank account via the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC). Any questions at this time should be directed to the NSLSC or your bank.
  • Ready to be released: everything is done and your money will be released on the date(s) under “Estimated date” (see additional information below).
  • Confirmation of Enrolment required: money is ready to be released but we must wait for you to start classes so that your school can confirm that you are in full-time studies. Once that is done, money will be released. Click on the link for details because the Confirmation of Enrolment process varies by school.
  • On hold: there are several reasons that your funding could be on hold. For example, you may not have submitted all required documents or your application is under review. Contact your financial aid office for information on the hold.
  • No loan option: you indicated that you only want to receive grant funding – not the loan. Remember, you can change your mind and get the loan, but there are deadlines.

The “Estimated date” is the date that your payment is scheduled to be deposited into your bank account. The ministry notifies the National Student Loans Service Center (NSLSC) who ultimately deposits the funds directly into your bank account. It’s important to keep your banking information up to date with the NSLSC. If they are unable to deposit the funds directly (e.g. due to an invalid account number) a cheque will be mailed to you.

Contact the NSLSC directly if you have a new bank account or if you have any questions about the deposit of your funding as the ministry doesn’t have access to your bank account information:
