Purpose

As a component of the Canada Student Loans Program: Part-Time Student Loan and/or Grant Application, the Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies provides grant aid to low-income students studying on a part-time basis.

Amount of Aid

Up to $1,200 for the current academic year

Who Can Get This Aid

High-need students who are taking between 20 to 59 percent of a full course load may get this aid. Your program of study must be at the postsecondary level (degree, diploma or certificate program).

How to Apply

You can download the Canada Student Loans Program: Part-Time Student Loan and/or Grant Application from the OSAP website.

    Students Who are Attending a School in Ontario:

    Send your application to your financial aid office.

    Students Attending a School located Outside of Ontario:

    Send your application to your school to complete Section E of your application. Once they have completed that section, send your application to the Student Financial Assistance Branch.

Deadlines

The deadline that your financial aid office must receive your completed application and all required documents by is based on the length of your study period:

  • Study Periods less than 30 days long: within the first 7 days of the study period start date.
  • Study Periods from 30 days to 20 weeks long: within the first 30 days of your study period start date.
  • Study Periods 21 weeks or longer: no later than 90 days prior to the end of the study period.

Information Your School Needs to Provide

Your school must provide information about your study period by completing Section E of your application.

What Happens After You Apply

Your application will be reviewed by your financial aid office to ensure that all information and required documentation has been provided. If any information is missing and/or incomplete, they will contact you directly.

Once all information and required documents have been provided, your eligibility for each type of aid associated with your application will be determined. In the case of the Canada Student Loans Program: Part-Time Student Loan and/or Grant Application, you will be considered for the following aid programs:

Once your eligibility has been determined, you will receive notification from your financial aid office telling you the amount of aid you will be receiving from each of the aid programs listed above.

You will receive notification from your financial aid office regarding the amount of aid you have qualified to receive.

What Needs To Be Done Before You Can Get Your Aid

You must provide proof of your identity before any aid documents will be released to you.

How You Get Your Aid

If you are receiving a Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies, you will be given two documents from your financial aid office:

  • Certificate of Eligibility Part-Time Student Loans and Grants, which is the document that indicates the amount of aid you will be receiving; and
  • Canada Student Loan Agreement for Part-Time Students, in which you provide the contact and banking information required to negotiate your certificate.

Review both documents carefully and provide the information and signatures requested. You would then submit both documents to the NSLSC kiosk at your school or to a designated Canada Post outlet.

When You Get Your Aid

You cannot receive your Certificate of Eligibility Part-Time Student Loans and Grants until on/after your study period start date.

If you received notification indicating that you are eligible for a Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies and your study period has already started, please allow two to three weeks for your certificate to be received at your financial aid office.

Take Note:

  • Your completed certificate must be received at the NSLSC within 30 days of the date entered on the document by your financial aid office.
  • Your certificate must be received before the last day of the month of your study period end date printed on your document. If it is not, the certificate will be considered invalid and you will not have access to the amount of funds listed on it.

How A Change To Your Situation Affects Your Aid

    Early Withdrawals and Changes in Eligibility

    If you withdraw from studies or change from full- to part-time status within 30 calendar days of the first day of classes, the National Student Loans Service Centre will convert all or part of any Canada Student Grants that have been issued to you into a loan. 

    Furthermore, if a reassessment of your application determines that you are ineligible for previously issued Canada Student Grant(s), all or part of those grant(s) will be converted to a loan in accordance with the conditions stated on your Certificate of Eligibility.

How To Stay Eligible For Future Aid

You must successfully complete all of the courses that you received aid for in order to remain eligible for future aid consideration; otherwise, you will have to successfully complete one semester of self-funded studies before you can be considered for this grant in the future.
