The Ontario Student Opportunity Grant (OSOG) is available to help students reduce their annual Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan (COISL) debt.
Amount of Aid
The purpose of OSOG is to limit a student's repayable COISL debt to $7,300 for a two-term academic year and $10,950 for a three-term academic year. As a result, the amount of OSOG awarded to each student is based on the total amount of COISL they were eligible to receive for the academic year.
OSOG Study Terms and Debt Reduction Levels
The amount of OSOG you may be eligible to receive is calculated based on the total number of weeks of all of your eligible study periods for the academic year. If you are eligible for OSOG, your grant will be applied directly to the Ontario portion of your outstanding Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan (COISL) debt.
The amount of OSOG available to students for the 2013-2014 academic year is:
Less than 12 weeks
Not eligible for OSOG;
no change to COISL repayable amount
12 to 20 weeks in length
Not eligible for OSOG;
no change to COISL repayable amount
21 to 40 weeks in length
41 to 52 weeks in length
Who Can Get This Aid
Eligible full-time students who have received COISL for two or more terms in the 2013-2014 academic year.
You are eligible for a grant if you meet all of the following requirements for the 2013-2014 academic year:
- You negotiated a Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan (COISL) for the academic year.
- You are/were enrolled in a full-time program for two or more terms for the academic year.
- You have completed the study period(s) that you received funding for during the academic year.
- You are entitled to and negotiated a student loan(s) that exceeds $7,300 if your total study period was two terms or $10,950 if your total study period was three terms for the academic year.
How to Apply
You are automatically considered when you submit a 2013-2014 OSAP Application for Full-Time Students.
The deadline to submit your application is 60 days before the end of your study period.
The deadline to submit required documents is 40 days before the end of your study period. Documents received after the deadline date will not be considered.
How You Get Your Aid
OSOG is not paid directly to you. If you are eligible, your grant will be sent directly to the National Student Loans Service Centre to pay the Ontario portion of your Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan.
When Your OSOG Entitlement is Calculated
An estimate of the amount of OSOG you may qualify for is available as soon as you submit your online OSAP Application for Full-Time Students. Updated estimate information is available until such time that the first OSOG payments are made.
Your actual OSOG entitlement is not calculated until at least 60 days after your latest study period end date for the academic year.
How to Find Out the Amount of Your Aid
Details about the status of your OSOG entitlement are available online as part of your status information for OSAP for Full-Time Students. You will also receive a letter from the ministry once your OSOG entitlement has been paid to the NSLSC.
What Needs to be Done Before Your Actual OSOG Entitlement is Calculated
All income reported on your OSAP Application for Full-Time Students, which includes your income as well as income reported by your parent(s) and/or spouse (as applicable) must be verified with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) before your actual OSOG entitlement can be calculated.
If there is a discrepancy between the income that is reported on your application and the information received from Canada Revenue Agency, your funding entitlement will be reassessed and the amount of loan you are actually entitled to receive may change. A change to the amount of your loan entitlement may affect your eligibility for an Ontario Student Opportunity Grant.
Deadlines for submitting Income Tax Returns
In order to be considered for OSOG, you must file income tax returns to the Canada Revenue Agency within six years of the end of the academic year. For the 2013-2014 academic year, you must file your income tax returns by July 31, 2020 for all income reported on your 2013-2014 OSAP application. For example, if you have reported income for 2013 and 2014 on your 2013-2014 OSAP application, you would be required to file your 2013 and 2014 income tax returns prior to July 31, 2020 to be considered for OSOG for your 2013-2014 loan.
How a Change to Your Situation Affects Your Eligibility
You will be ineligible for OSOG if you:
- reduce your course load to part-time (less than 60 percent of a full course load or less than 40 per cent if you are a student with a permanent disability);
- you withdraw from your full-time program;
- are enrolled in a one-term program (less than 21 weeks) or have completed only one term of your program;
- have defaulted on a previous student loan(s);
- have been reassessed and your loan entitlement has been reduced to less than $7,300 for a two-term academic year or $10,950 for a three-term academic year; and/or
- you become ineligible to receive further assistance through OSAP.
OSOG Review Options
Your eligibility for OSOG can be re-considered if you did not complete your academic year for either of the following reasons:
Withdrawal Due to Medical Issues
You withdrew from one or more academic terms during the academic year before completing the term because of a serious medical condition, medical emergency, or because you were hospitalized for an extended period. As a result, you would have to repeat the term because you:
- were not able to attend or carry out the activities required to fulfil the course requirements in that term, and
- could not reasonably have been expected to complete the term.
Medical conditions or medical emergencies relating to a student’s child or other family member may be considered if documentation is provided showing that the student was required to withdraw from studies to provide full-time care for the individual.
Successful Appeal of Academic Expulsion
You were expelled from one or more academic terms during the academic year before completing the term and you:
- appealed the expulsion and an authorized appeal board granted your appeal,
- the length of your expulsion period did not reasonably allow you to attend or carry out the activities required to meet the program requirements of the term, and
- you could not have been reasonably expected to complete the term, and as a result, would have to repeat the term lost in the following academic year.
