Deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing students attending out-of-country postsecondary institutions in the 2008-2009 academic year (for programs starting any time after August 1, 2008) must apply for a Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan by submitting a 2008-2009 OSAP Application for Full-time Students.
Students from lower to middle income families will be eligible to receive loans to cover part of their eligible costs to study outside Canada. The maximum amount of student loan a single student may receive is $350 per week of study. Some students will be eligible to receive Canada Study Grants and /or Access Grants which will reduce the amount of their loan. Students may only be required to repay $7,000 of loan funding per year if they are eligible for the Ontario Student Opportunity Grant.
Students from families with moderate and higher incomes will be expected to make a contribution to the costs of their education, which will reduce the amount of loan assistance available.
All deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing students, regardless of family income, who have eligible education costs to study outside Canada that exceed the student loan weekly maximums, will receive a Bursary for Student with Disabilities Attending Out-of Country Postsecondary Institutions. Eligible education costs include tuition fees, ancillary fees, health insurance fees, books and supplies, room and board, personal living costs, and return trips home. There are limits to the amount of assistance that will be provided for some of these costs.
Application Process
If you are enrolling in a postsecondary institution for the first time in 2008-2009, you must fill out a 2008-2009 OSAP Application for Full-Time Students. You may apply using the paper application form or the online web application. On the application you must answer "Yes" to the question "Do you have a permanent disability?" to inform the ministry that you are a deaf student and are planning to attend a postsecondary institution outside Canada. This will ensure that the Bursary for Students with Disabilities Attending Out-of-Country Postsecondary Institutions application form and 2008-2009 OSAP Application Guide will be sent to you.
